Mushrooms

I spent the past two days out at Four Fold Farm, inoculating mushroom logs with my partner Ahren and our friend Simon. They are part of Blackshire Gardens, one of Ahren's businesses (this one involving agriculture and permaculture, among other things. The other is a carpentry business. He's so talented).

We were inoculating the logs with shitake mushroom spores. Still to come--oyster mushroom spores. We had some logs around the house last year, with oyster mushrooms growing on them. You have not tasted heaven (at least in my world) until you've picked fresh oyster mushrooms off of logs leaning up against your house and eaten them, fried in olive oil, all by themselves. Delicious would be an understatement.

Anyways, thought I'd share some photos of the days.

This is me and Simon, stuffing spawn into holes drilled into the logs. In the background are logs that Ahren inoculated last year. There were already some cute little shitakes poking out of some of them.

Heres Simon and I again. He's still stuffing spawn, but I'm painting the ends of the logs with beeswax. We also painted over all the holes, and any other gashes. That keeps the moisture in and other fungi and whatnot out.

This is Ahren and Simon.

And this is my lovely partner Ahren, having a good time, proud of his efforts. And I'm very proud off him.

Have a great weekend.

Aimee
